THE LAB EXPERIENCE

IMG_1685_edu.jpeg

The EduLAB learning adventure creates interdisciplinary teams to develop prototypes of educational technology solutions and tools in a rapid concept-design process. Teams include students and professionals from Finland and around the world with expertise in graphic design, programming, sound design, game design, production, script-writing, sales and marketing, and education. All LABs are taught in English.

Oulu EduLAB participants are made up of students from the Oulu University of Applied Sciences degree programs, international exchange students and professionals completing retraining as Open University students. Students additionally come from the University of Oulu. Participants are primarily drawn from the advanced Bachelor’s degree level however there are possibilities for those students completing Master’s theses as well as PhD studies to be part of the LAB as well. Oulu EduLAB participants are also joined by a cohort of students in the Oulu University of Applied Sciences Vocational Teacher Education qualification program. This teaching training cohort (under the same name - Oulu EduLAB) is a separate group that have enrolled in the 60 credit vocational teacher training program. In this way, they participate in the Oulu EduLAB and get qualified as a vocational teacher at the same time.

I created this video to express my EduLab journey. With that I would like to thank Blair, Janne, Sanna, all other mentors, coaches and of course my teammates and fellow EduLab students, for this amazing experience!
— Eeva Kiuru, 2016 EduLAB student

EDULAB CURRICULUM

The EduLAB curriculum consists of two 30 ECTS credit course packages: Demo Path and Product Path.

Demo Path is a four-month package that acts as a starting point for all EduLAB participants. The first month focuses on rapid concept design and learning the basics of working in the Ed Tech industry, from design to business. The next stage is dedicated to prototype development and refining the skills of each individual in his or her chosen role in the team. Each team on the path aims to create a workable Ed Tech demo. Prototypes can take on a number of different forms such as educational games, apps for learning or learning management systems to name a few.

Those who have completed the demo path can continue on to Product Path, an additional four-month study program. In the Product Path, teams continue to develop their products, aiming for a finished product or a service and a start-up.

The LAB process is intensive and requires a lot of energy, resilience and motivation but it gives unique perspectives on what can be achieved.
— Perdo Coutinho, 2015 LAB participant
